Superlatives & subsets

BDO Simpson Xavier's current recruitment ad (heard on RTE Radio this morning) mentions that they are (something like) one of the top 50 companies in Ireland to work for.

Rubbish, I say; absolute rubbish, in fact. Of course, relative to the qualification of the point that they are in the top 10 of the 2007 list of the 50 Best Companies to Work for in Ireland produced by the Great Place to Work® Institute Ireland and published by The Irish Independent, it is a true statement. But, therefore, only true within this subset: of the companies that were "nominated" (surely, "that registered") and "selected", BDO Simpson Xavier were judged by the process to be in the top 10.

The Great Place to Work organisation needs to tighten up its use of language and tighten up what participants can say in relation to the results. It is terribly misleading to go from being successful in the process to making the absolute claim.
